Welcome to my independent research project for LIT 270. To navigate, click on the tabs above this text box. In recent years, a significant amount of attention has been directed toward the graphic novel as a medium. It has been the focus of numerous studies and debates as to what graphic literature has to offer in the classroom environment. This website will provide a brief background and history, while also detailing the results of research geared toward explaining why these texts may be beneficial if taught in schools.
Pictured below are a selection of graphic novels. All cover images are taken from Amazon.
To find more examples of young adult graphic novels or search for recommendations, here are a few websites that may help.
Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA): This website contains a section titled Great Graphic Novels for Teens, featuring a number of lists that recommend graphic novels for young adult readers. http://www.ala.org/yalsa/great-graphic-novels
YouTube: Using search terms such as "young adult graphic novels" will bring up a number of results. Many of these results are video reviews created by young adults who are interested in sharing their favorite novels with their viewers. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=graphic+novels+for+young+adults
There are also a number of smaller lists that, much like the YouTube videos, are created independently in order to recommend graphic young adult literature to those browsing the internet. Here are a few examples:
I am a senior English Literary Studies Major at York College of Pennsylvania with minors in both Creative Writing and Professional Writing. I have grown up reading young adult literature and enjoy looking at how various formats can impact readers in different ways. In the future, I have plans of writing my own young adult stories. I am very interested in young adult literature as a vessel for social justice and allowing readers to gain a deeper understanding of what other people experience. The format of texts is also a topic of interest for me, as I like to examine how the structure of a narrative shapes the effect that a novel can have on its reader.
